The Village Locksmith
Yes we work on automobiles.
New and Old
Most newer automobiles are equipped with anti theft technology. This means it is harder to just bypass the ignition start the car and drive away. There is a chip inside the key that talks to the on board computer. The computer checks to see if it is the correct key and if it is it allows the vehicle to start.
Losing your car keys in our neck of the woods can be quite an experience. It is not only Quite frustrating being stranded but also financially taxing. The average cost of a lost key with a chip in it can have an average cost starting around $250.00 and can go up from there.
Here's a way to avoid being stuck in the lost key situation.
Get the key code and possibly the pin code
Next time your at your automotive dealer show prof of ownership and they can usually get you the keycode and pin for your vehicle.
Get a mechanical key (without the Chip.)
This will unlock your doors.
This key you should Hide somewhere on the exterior of the vehicle.
The Mechanical key does not start the car.
Make sure it is secure. Under the license plate screw is a great place to hide.
Next you should make sure you have a spare that has a chip and is programmed to the vehicle.
The Chipped key should be hidden somewhere inside the car. Putting the chipped key anywhere you can access it once you have used the mechanical key to get in.
If you do lose both keys and have no spare the key code you got will help the locksmith generate a key. The pin code will help access the onboard computer.

Unsure of the year?
You can find the Vehicle Identification Number also known as the VIN, located at the bottom edge of the drivers side window. It can also be found on the drivers door edge or on the frame of the drivers side.
To determine the year, count the alphanumeric code to the tenth letter or number. Below is a table to help decode and find the correct year.
10th Digit of the VIN = Model Year
1996 = T 2006 = 6
1997 = V 2007 = 7
1998 = W 2008 = 8
1999 = X 2009 = 9
2000 = Y 2010 = A
2001 = 1 2011 = B
2002 = 2 2012 = C
2003 = 3 2013 = D
2004 = 4 2014 = E
2005 = 5 2015 = F
